In Kilkenny city there's a small and narrow old town gate hidden in one of the side streets from Parliament Street, Abbey Street. What remains of this town gate is an archway and a segment of wall between a row of old houses and a new estate with a car park. Where the new houses are, there was a long section of the original town wall which was demolished to allow the construction of the estate. The passage of the archway is aligned northeast-southwest (60°-240°). The name of the town gate, Black Freren, stands for Black Friars, the other name of the Dominican friars, so called for the colour of their cloaks. At the end of the street where the gate is, there's the Black Abbey of Kilkenny.
A beautiful white and ginger cat came along while we were looking at the town gate and asked me for strokes.
