It seems that this grave slab once belonged to the family tomb in the Ballyadams church.
It has been sheltered under a timber canopy in a public garden in Portarlington.
The slab has been cut in two, probably for allowing an easier transportation. However the effigy misses both its hands and the head as well.
To add to the misery of the monument, it's been severely defaced many times with writings and a bucketful of a greenish paint.
The effigy is of a man, allegedly Robert Bowen, with both his hands resting on his chest. He wears a long suit with a belt and knee-high boots. His feet rest against a cushion.
Under the figure is a rectangular slab with two lines of a Gothic inscription which, unfortunately, is mostly missing and illegible.
It's 2.16 metres long and 72 centimetres wide. It's lying along a southeast-northwest (160°-340°) axis. Though it is said that this slab once covered the tomb at the Ballyadams church, the sizes of the slab don't seem to match the sizes of the tomb in the church.
A sudden rainstorm came down while I was taking the photographs of the effigy!
