This cross pillar was a standing stone in origin.
It's a slender spike of sedimetary rock with jagged margins.
Like many other standing stones, its function was either ritual or as a boundary marker, but with the advent of the Christianity, the stone was Christianised by carving inscribed crosses on both the main sides.
The name Lankill comes from the Irish Lainn Cille that means "Land of the Church". An early monastic site was nearby.
It's in a field, quite far from the gate on the road. I walked on a muddy path for about 480 metres, then I entered the field to my right and walked for about 40 metres south.
The standing stone, now a cross pillar, is 2.34 metres tall, 30 centimetres wide at the base and only 3 centimetres at the top, and it's 21 centimetres thick at the base and only 5 centimetres at the top.
It leans to the northeast (50°) by 14°.
On the southwest (230°) face there are two decorations.
The upper one is partly missing due to the splitting of the stone, the remaining part shows two concentric circles with a cross in the centre. The outer circle has a diameter of 32 centimetres.
The lower one is made by five concentric circles, with an outer diameter of 23.5 centimetres. From the outer circle some radial lines depart, like sun rays, reaching the upper decoration.
On the northeast face there are two decorations.
The upper one is partly missing due to the splitting of the stone, the remaining part shows two concentric circles with a cross in the centre. The outer circle has a diameter of 34 centimetres.
The lower one is made by five concentric circles with an outer diameter of 28 centimetres. Unlike the opposite face, there are no radial lines here.
