St. Mogue's holy well is situated on the side of the N11 that goes through Ferns. The volume of traffic on this road is awful, and taking a photo of the site from across the road is a challenging task.
Actually there are two well houses at this site, one is at the road level and one is below the road level, flush with the meadow to the north of N11.
The well house at the road level is a square stone house, with a cap roof and a stone cross of the Passion on the top. From the southeast there are 11 steps to the well itself that is below the roadside, with an archway facing east (90°). Those steps are now blocked by a locked gate. This well house dates from 1847 and is decorated on the south side with a carved stone head taken from Clone church.
From this house a path goes down to another well house, about 20 metres to the northeast (30°), set in an area with a small garden, a bench and a table.
The water in this well house comes from the well house above, and then leaves this second house to the east, towards a tree at the end of the garden.
Unfortunately the presence of the busy road right above the head of a visitor takes away any sense of tranquillity of this place.
