Coming from the Grey Abbey we were going to take the ferry to Strangford, but we took our time to visit this nice tower house close to the harbour.
This castle was built in the 16th century by William Le Savage. In 1635 Sir James Montgomery of Rosemount, Patrick Savage's brother-in-law, restored the castle with a new roof and new floors so that his sister could live comfortly in there.
The building has a square plan with a small projecting turret on the south corner. The eastern corner is mostly in ruins. The entrance at the base of the tower is protected by a small machicolation and the entrance to the ground floor chamber is protected by a murder-hole. A spiral stairway within the tower leads to the first floor and another spiral stairway in the west corner takes to roof level.
