The south wall has the entrance doorway protected by a machicolation at the roof level. The low building on the left is the seat of the local handball club. I wonder if it's really necessary to build a handball alley next to every heritage monument in Ireland!

We stopped at this castle when we saw it along the road in Tuamgraney.
It was erected by the O'Gradys.
The O'Grady was the leading family in the ecclesiastic world of Ireland of the 14th century.
John O'Grady was Archbishop of Cashel in 1332, his son John O'Grady was Archbishop of Tuam in 1368, and his grandson John O'Grady (they did have fantasy for the names!) was Bishop of Elphin in 1405. The family had ancestors back to the early 11th century.
This tower house was built around 1500 next to a church now gone.
The tower measure about 8.50 metres by 11.50 metres at the base. A doorway is in the south-southeast (165°) wall, with a machicolation above it. The castle is roofless.
Again, a heritage monument has become a part of some handball court. In this case the nearby low building is the seat of the local handball club, established in 1911!
