Kilmihil stands for "Michael's church". In Kilmihil there are the ruins of an old church among a great number of amazing grave slabs, next to a Holy Shrine and Holy Well both dedicated to St. Michael.
It is said that St. Senan of Inis Cathaig founded an early church here, around 530, after he returned from Rome, and dedicated it to St. Michael to whom he had promised devotion.
Probably he was inspired by the report of the apparition of the saint over the summit of Mount Garganus, in Apulia, Italy.
The graveyard around the ruins of this small chapel has dozens of beautifully carved grave slabs from the 17th and 18th century. These are the most interesting part of a visit to this place.
Nearby there's a holy shrine. A well is at the site and a small building with a statue of St. Michael protected by a glass enclosure stands above it.
