The irregular opening in the east wall of the house.

Behind the modern parish church at Clontubrid is a small well house, measuring 3 metres in length and 2.10 metres in width.
The well house was destroyed at the beginning of the 19th century and was reconstructed by Fr. Dowling in the 1920s.

The well house has a pointed and narrow irregular opening in the east wall, closed with locked gate. From here four steep stone steps go to the water.
The high pitched ceiling inside the well house doesn't copy the outer roof.

The most outstanding detail in this well house is the heart-shaped finial, with a raised edge and a badly weathered figure in the centre of the east face. The figure has been carved in bas-relief, it has a rounded head and a pointed chin. It wears a long robe.
It seems that the finial was taken here from an earlier church, and this church could be St. Lachtain's.

It is possible that the holy well was dedicated to St. Fiachra.

A finial very similar to this one is on the west gable of the church at Kilmakedar.
