This castle is in sad, poor and ruinous conditions. It's a tall square tower house, three-storey high.
It might date to the Norman period and have been the dwelling of William Devoreux of Talleraght.
Talleraght, also corrupted as Tellarought, derives from the Irish Tulaigh Reacht, meaning "Statute Hill".
There's a wide breach in the southwest (230°) wall, where very likely the main doorway was. Above this entrance there is a murder hole. Another smaller breach is in the northwest wall. On this side, at the roof level, is a machicolation. A large portion of the wall is missing in the east corner.
On the ground floor there's a large chamber with a barrel-vaulted ceiling.
Though the conditions are ruinous, it is possible to access the castle and go up to the ceiling using the remains of a staircase.
