The motte in Clonard was built in 1177 by Hugh de Lacey when the area was occupied by the Normans. It has a diameter at the base of about 48 metres and 14 metres at the top, and it's 9.5 metres high. It had a timber fortification on its top and a bailey to the south.
Its distinctive feature is the lime tree planted on the top in the 19th century.
The motte is on a private ground and access is strictly forbidden, so I took the photos from the road.
