The name of this townland is Magherakeel, in Irish "Machaire Chille", meaning "plain of the church".
This refers to an early church built on this site in the 6th century. In the 12th century this church became part of Termonamongan Parish. The name of the townland is after the O'Mongan, the erenachs of this parish.
Over here there's an ancient graveyard with several interesting gravestones as old as 250 years, along with the memorial to the O'Mongan family which gave the name to the townland. The memorial was probably built between the 18th and 19th century. A small cross on the top of the memorial is believed to come from a 12th century church in Dublin. Another rough and undecorated stone cross of unknown age stands in the south section of the graveyard.
The weather changed to the worst suddenly while we were here, so I hadn't the chance to take photos of the ruins of the church that lie north of the graveyard.
