In Ratoath there's a nice motte in the centre of the town, in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church, southwest of this building.
The mound is completely overgrown with tall trees and wild flowers and could go unnoticed.
Climbing the motte is rather hard due to the steep sides of the mound and the slippery ground.
The motte has a height of about 12 metres and a diameter at the base of about 50 metres, and is surrounded by a ditch. Traces of a bailey are to the southeast.
According to some records, the motte was built by Hugh de Lacy at the end of the 12th century and is still referred to throughout the 13th century, but it is reported as abandoned at the beginning of the 14th century.
