It is said that St. Patrick founded a monastery here in the 5th century, and then placed it in the hands of St. Cassán, whose relics were venerated here.
The round tower was built in 11th or 12th century, it is well preserved but it was badly restored in 1841. The usual windows present in all the round towers, are missing in this one.
The doorway, which faces east (85°) has a keystone decorated with a crucifixion with the twisted legs, and there are two heads carved on both side of the doorway.
At the base the tower has a diameter of 5.5 metres.
The church in ruins dates from the 16th century.
This one was the first place we saw the first time we went to Ireland on June 23rd, 1994, but at that time we didn't know anything about this monument.
