Not far from Audleystown double court tomb is this nice tower house overlooking the Strangford Lough.
We came here before on September 12th, 2003. The difference between that time and this time is that in 2003 we were able to visit the castle inside and climb the inner stairways up to the intact roof. This time the castle was padlocked at the doorway.
This doorway faces southeast (150°) and is in a wall between two projecting square turrets linked by an archway at the roof level. Above the archway is the machicolation used to protect the access.
The castle was probably built in the 15th century and was named after its 16th century owner John Audley.
The tower house measures 9 metres by 8 metres and is at 200 metres from the car park. The short walk under the trees is one the nicest things in this area.
From this castle there's a nice view of Portaferry castle.
