This was the Tholsel of Carlingford. As the term says, its original function was to levy taxes on goods entering the town. It also played the role of a town gate, it is one of the few left in Ireland and the only one in Carligford. Originally it had three stories, but in the 19th century alterations were made and now it looks like a small house with an archway.
In 1834 it was used by the Corporation of Carlingford for meeting. It seems it was also used as a Parliament to make laws for the Pale.
Another of its functions in its history was as a town gaol in the 18th century.
