The beauty of this abbey can be compared to the beauty of the Athassel abbey in county Tipperary.
It was built in 1189 by Cathal Crovdearg O'Connor, king of Connacht, for the Cistercian monks, and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The abbey is now in ruins and only some parts of the cloister survive, the abbey has only some simple decorations, but the chancel has finely carved stoneworks and pillars.
The unique feature of this abbey is that it's the only one in Ireland that still has a medieval fresco on one of the walls of the chancel, that is locked with a gate and protected by a newly built roof.
