A very attractive old castle in a very prominent position looking over the Carlingford Lough. Sadly there isn't enough room around it to take a good photo.
The access to the castle is via a staircase, and then a pathway runs all around the building to the southwest, where the doorway is, and then to the north.
The castle is closed to the public for safety reasons.
The building of the castle was commissioned by Hugh de Lacy (the same of Trim Castle) before 1186, but it owes its name to King John (Richard the Lionheart's brother) who came to Carlingford in 1210.
The east section was built in the mid 13th century, but some alterations occurred in the 15th and 16th centuries.
We came here for the first time on May 9th, 2000.
