In medieval times Loughrea was protected by a ditch and a town wall. This had three gates through which people and goods could enter and leave the town.
This is the only remaining town gate from those times, it dates from the 15th century. Between 1957 and 1986 it was turned into a museum, which was later moved in a new building in the St. Brendan's Cathedral grounds. It measures about 6 metres of length and 7.70 metres of width. On its west (285°) side there's a timber door. The matching passage on the east side has been partly walled up and turned into an arched window. There are windows on the west and north wall as well. The south side has a small section of the town wall still visible.
