This holy well was part of the church founded and built by St. Finnian when he arrived to modern co. Meath in around 520. Finnian was born in Myshall, where he also founded a monastery.
The well at Clonard can be reached at the end of a 200 metres long path.
Unfortunately the well has been restored in June 2011 and a horrendous concrete wall has been built around the well with a concrete fence around, and a timber canopy has been erected above it.
To complete the disaster, a steel cage has been put over the well. It looks more like a cattle pen than a holy well!
The water in the well is yellowish and has a terrible smell of iron chloride. The level of the water is so deep in the ground that a small plastic tank with a long metal chain is provided to collect it.
The well is accessed via a few concrete steps on the southeast (145°) side.
