We were in this area last year and saw the Cashelfean wedge tomb, but we didn't know that there was this nice cross slab not very far.
When we saw the photo of this place on the internet, we thought it was not taller than 60 centimetres. As a matter of fact this beautiful cross slab is 1.80 metres tall and is 83 centimetres wide, though the upper part of the slab is wider and round, with a diameter of 90 centimetres. The slab is only 15 centimetres thick.
On its west-southwest (250°) face the slab has the carving of a Maltese cross inscribed in a circle, and it can be seen like a solid version of a ringed Celtic cross.
The slab might date from 650 AD and could mark the burial place of Aedh, an early monk who had a cell at this place.
Few metres northeast of this slab are the ruins of a very old church which was built during the 12th century.
