This cross stands a few metres north from the Round Tower, in the St. Columba's church graveyard.
In the same graveyard there are other two high crosses, but this one is the oldest of the three and was probably erected right after the monastery was founded.
It carries an inscription that reads PATRICII ET COLUMBE CRUX. It's aligned east-west (100°-280°) and it's richly decorated on all faces, with scenes from the Old and New Testament and geometric patterns and knots and spirals.
The cross is 2.75 metres tall, 85 centimetres wide and 27 centimetres thick. The arms open at 1.25 metres. It stands on a stone base which is 74 centimetres tall, 1.50 metres wide and 1.34 metres deep.
