There are two high crosses in this settlement founded in 812 by St. Diarmaid. The Vikings attacked the monastery twice in the 9th century. It was burned in 1106.
The first high cross is to the south of the St. James's church. It's 2.66 metres tall, 36 centimetres wide and 23 centimetres thick. Its arms open at a width of 1.02 metres. It stands on a base that measures 75 centimetres oh height and that in turns stands on a more modern plinth. The total height of the cross is 3.41 metres. The cross is decorated with scenes from the Old and New Testament on the west, north and south faces, and with geometric patterns on the east face. The west face is aligned to the west (265°). The base has nice carvings as well.
We came here for the first time on June 3rd, 2001.
