A monastery was founded here by the king of Leinster Diarmait Mac Murchadha in the 12th century. It was run by Augustinian monks under the protection of the King.
Today only a part of the church and of the chancel survive today. The round tower is very unusual, it has a square section at its base and then gets round higher up. A spiral stairs still leads to the belfry. The church is aligned to the east-northeast (70°).
