There are two high crosses in this settlement founded in 812 by St. Diarmaid. The Vikings attacked the monastery twice in the 9th century. It was burned in 1106.
The second high cross is to the north of the St. James's church. It's 2.12 metres tall, 42 centimetres wide and 30 centimetres thick. Its arms open at a width of 1.15 metres. It stands on a base that measures about 91 centimetres and this base is in the centre of more modern plynth. The total height of this cross is 3.03 metres.
The cross is decorated with scenes from the Old and New Testament on the west and east faces, and with geometric patterns on the north and south faces and on the base. The west face is aligned to west-southwest (240°).
The mason wasn't very good at this work because the cross doesn't fit perfectly in the socket of its base.
