This staircase turret is all that remains of a castle built in 1467 over the site of Norman tower dating from 1200.
That Norman tower was erected near the site of an earlier motte-and-bailey built in 1183 by William Magner, a Norman settler brought in Ireland by Philip de Barry.
In 1375 the Norman tower was turned into a granary and a new watchtower was built nearby, but this was destroyed in 1460 during the Gaelic Rebellion, and seven years later the Norman tower, which survived the attack, was turned into a castle and a turret with a spiral staircase was added. When the castle was destroyed in 1599 the only thing that remained was this turret and a short segment of the bawn wall.
Today the ruins stands in the backyard of an abandoned farmhouse. The turret looks east (100°) and has a machicolation all around its roof line.
