Cairn D is the largest cairn of the complex, it has 54 large kerb stones, but it's also the only one without burial chamber. The excavations conducted in 1865 and 1868 revealed that the cairn was just a huge heap of stones. Only some animal bones were found among the thousands stones that the workmen removed.
The conclusion was that this site was just a cerimonial point for gathering or a cenotaph, that is a memorial for someone who is buried elsewhere.
Being the research unsuccessful, the place was abandoned and left with the deep scar that we see today, a large cut in the east side of the cairn.
The heap of stones has a diameter of about 52 metres.
