This area is associated with two saints, Abban and Dalbach, and has the name of Coole Abbey, though no abbey is visible today.
Of the monastery founded here in the 5th or 6th century only two churches and a holy well survive.
The holy well is tucked away under a group of trees and is a lovely surprise. The spring itself is protected by a barrel-vaulted well house with little statue and other small items and belongings left here by some worshippers. A nicely flagstone paved area has been set around the spring with three steps to the water and stone seats on one side. The water from this spring leaves the well to the south (190°) and creates a small stream that runs to the southeast (120°).
The well is dedicated to St. Dalbach. According to a folk tale, many many years ago this well was not more than a spring of water. A woman of Coole Abbey House saw a monk kneeled and praying at this spring, so she ordered that an oratory was built over it.
The well is believed to cure warts and sore eyes.
