It is believed that the original castle at this site was built by Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, for his brother-in-law, Gilbert de Nugent in 1181, on a land that he was granted to Hugh de Lacy by Strongbow.
The present building is all that remains of the castle built in the 13th century on the site of the former building, and it was a a rectangular fortress with cylindrical towers on each corner.
Today only the west section survives. The building is on the Main Street in Delvin, a few metres northeast from the Post Office.
