Originally this was a simple four-storey tower house built in the 15th century by the Laffan family. The main room was on the second floor and had a fireplace and a toilet. The entrance lobby to the tower faces south (190°) and was protected by a murder hole, that was an opening in the above floor through which boiling liquids or other heavy and harmful objects were dropped on unwelcome visitors.
In the 16th century a two-storey house was added to the northeast corner of the tower, this addition had battlemented parapets in the same style as the main tower. A new addition at the east end of the castle was made in the 17th century with an 18 stone steps staircase.
