It seems that this holy well is famous in the area. It is said to have been blessed by St. Olcán, who was a disciple of St. Patrick.
The well is renowned for its healing powers, as witnessed by the rag tree above to it. Crystals of gypsum taken from the bottom of the well are believed to have powers too. They would protect fishermen from drowning in the lough, emigrants from perishing at sea during the long trip to America, women during childbirth and homes from fires and burglary.
Three stone steps on the southeast (110°) side lead to the water which is dark, dirty and filled with insects larvae.
