There are three interesting things to see in Killybegs. One of them is the fantastic Holy Well dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. The folklore has it that a boat that was carrying Coptic monks from Egypt to Ireland got into a storm and the monks started praying St. Catherine of Alexandria for help. When they safely landed on the shores of Killybegs they found this well and gave it her name. St. Catherine is also Killybeg's patron saint.
It is located at the foot of the hill where the ruins of Kit's Castle are. The area of the well is perfectly maintained on a daily basis by a caretaker. A white railing surrounds a concrete pavement embellished by flowers planted all around. In the centre of the pavement is the well, with a whitewashed wall to protect it. The wall was built in 1940's, the small chapel with the statue of Our Lady was built in 1959. The current statue is of Carrara white marble, made in 1960's to replace the original one made with chalk by a sculptor in Dublin. The white wall has the opening on the north (5°) side.
The well is very well known for the many miracles it worked on sick people, and it is daily visited by many people who come here to pray and touch the water, which is really clear.
