Athenry is one of the walled Irish towns to still have evidences of this medieval heritage. It had five gates and nine circular towers in its walls. The castle at the northeast end of the town was surrounded by its own walls with one gate and two towers. Today only one gate and five towers of the town survive. Two of these towers are the southeast tower and the tower that once stood between Spittle Gate to its east and Swan Gate to its west.
