St. Mel's Cathedral is massive and chunky building. Nothing more than the external walls remains. The stone blocks which form the walls are incredibly large, and they may give the impression that only a giant could build something like that.
The original church was made of timber and was built in the 5th century. The present ruins are of a church built in the 9th century.
St. Mel was the nephew of St. Patrick, son of his sister Darerca.
The structure is 11 metres long and 7 metres wide, the walls are 80 centimetres thick.
The church is aligned east-west (95°-275°).
