The red and yellow stick is 1 metre long, for scale.

St. Colmcille founded a monastery here in 574 on the land that a local king, Aodh, son of Ainmire, gave him.
The only remains of that monastery are the round tower and the high cross on the other side of the N15 that unfortunately runs through the site.
The round tower stands to half of its original height or less, it seems that it was already damaged a couple of centuries ago and that at that time part of the stone in its masonry were used to build the nearby bridge.
The tower is separated and protected from the main road by a low stone wall. It's 8.50 metres tall and has a diameter of about 4.10 metres. On the southeast (105°) side, at 2.07 metres from the ground, there's a lintelled doorway which measures 1.46 metres of height and 45 centimetres of width.
At a height of 6.45 metres in the wall on the southwest side of the tower there's a small lintelled square window.
It seems that this is the only round tower in the county of Sligo.
