This conical earthowrk is a motte built in Norman times.
Its unique feature is that it was built over and early Christian ringfort with three earth banks around, indicating this was the former site of a high status local chieftain.

The earthen banks are now covered with trees and the whole structure can be better made out from high above.
This motte didn't have a bailey, which was the enclosed courtyard where other buildings, kitchens and stores were contained.

The access to this motte is from the north, and the earthowrk is about 11 metres high.
