A weird grave marker with the date 1881.

Here at Mount Irwin there was the only Carmelite Priory of county Sligo. It was originally known as Knockmore and the grant for its building came through the O’Gara family around 1350.
Almost nothing remains today of that priory, apart from the south wall at half of its height and a section of the east gable with a hint of the east window. The north wall is missing and the west gable is mostly missing and overgrown.
In the graveyard there are two or three very interesting slabs, and a fragment of the east window of the church is resting on the south boundary wall of the cemetery.
The ruined church is about 27 metres long and 8.50 metres wide and is aligned to east (95°).
On the day we visited the place a group of men were felling some very high and old trees that were threatening the integrity of the cemetery wall. One of these men showed us some of the fine things of this site.
Though the explanation and the place were interesting we had to make it quick because the midges were very hungry and we were their favourite meal at that moment of the day!
