Tullylease is a tiny group of houses but has interesting treasures, like this ruined church. It is a nave and chancel church built over several centuries. The earliest church was built here in 664, when St. Beirechert, a monk who arrived from the North of England in that year along with his father and brother, decided to stop in Tullylease and founded a monastery. What we see today is a building with parts from 12th to 15th century. The nave is from the 13th century, the chancel was rebuilt in the 15th century, when it was taken over by the Augustinians. The building is aligned to the east (95°). Into the inner walls of the church eight beautiful slabs have been set. Unfortunately a few of them have suffered some defacing by some mindless person. If damages continue, OPW will have no other choice but to cover the slabs with a glass to ensure that these treasures could be visible in the future. This place is part of the rounds done during the Feast of St. Beirechert on the 18th of February.
