We stopped here because we saw a red dot on the map while we were driving to Castlequarter. It was raining heavily when I got down the car to visit this holy well, and the trees that cover the spot hardly helped me not to get too wet.
Just like the holy well outside Kinvara, and the holy well with same name, this holy well is dedicated to St. Colman Mac Duagh, the saint who founded Kilmacduagh monastery.
The well itself is a deep circular hole in the ground, lined with stones to form a solid structure. It was dry on the day of my visit. A path departs from the well and goes around the small wood that surrounds the holy site. In the centre of this small wood there's a stone structure that represents an altar used for the Mass held here on August 14th.
There are a few legends in connection to this well. The one I like the most is of a woman who had a baby who was teething and was crying desperately. On a night she went out for a walk and passed by this well and saw some people and a priest saying Mass at the altar. The priest asked her to join them, but she realized they were ghosts from another world and ran away. Her baby never gave her any trouble since.
